When the town of Bellefontaine was laid out in 1820, a plot in the northwest corner was reserved to be used as a burial ground. This was in use until 1852 when the new Bellefontaine cemetery was laid out.
As stated by Gen. Robert P. Kennedy in his Historical Review of Logan County, published in 1903, "Within its limits are still resting some of the older and earlier citizens who came into the wilderness and did much to make this one of the garden spots of the new State of Ohio; over them grow the grasses of nearly a hundred years."
It is known that some of the bodies were moved to other cemeteries. But some the the early citizens are still resting in the cemetery, now known as Powell Park Cemetery or simply as Powell Park.
While the graves are still there only two markers remain. In 2008, the cemetery is a roughly block-sized recreation area with a basketball court, playground equipment, trees and grass.
The grave markers were reportedly removed in the early 1900s in order to stimulate real estate sales around the park.
