Add PhotosRhode Island Historical Cemetery Portsmouth #23
Location: 75 ft north of Sisson Pond Rd.
10 burials with inscriptions from 1718 to 1896
NOTE: This lot used to be a considerable distance off Jepson Lane in an overgrown area of neglected farmland; in 1975 it had broken stones in a tangle of brush. Last reported visit in 1998 it was then in the backyard of a new home where it was being carefully maintained by the homeowners. CETA and town hall info both use the number 40 for this cemetery. As of 1998, the state sign says 23. Although the burial ground was in good condition in 1998, pieces of two broken stones lie on a heap of stones near the cemetery, each bearing a carver's name: "P. Stevens & Son" and "P. Burden, Prov."
Surveyed by:
[1] George H. Richardson [1896, GHR Scrapbook, p. 64]
[2] anonymous [circa 1900,"Rhode Island Tombstone Inscriptions", at RIHS].
[3] Patricia Bodine [28 Oct. 1975 for CETA]
Both GHR and ANON gave the location on Edward Sisson's farm.
This cemetery has been recorded but not checked.
