The Macktown National Historical District is located in Macktown Forest Preserve. The district covers about fifty acres and includes the area around the Stephen Mack house, the Whitman trading post, and the Macktown Living History Center, and it also includes about twenty acres of the public golf course. Stephen Mack came to this location in 1835 and called his new settlement Pecatonic. In 1847 the name of the town, including the settlement across the river, was changed to Rockton by a legislative act. In time the settlement across the river prospered, and Mack's failed settlement became known as Macktown. Stephen Mack, Hononegah, and their son Henry Clay Mack were originally buried in a family cemetery within the forest preserve near the present golf course clubhouse. In 1880 the farmer plowed the cemetery under, and their remains were exhumed and reburied at Phillips Cemetery. In July 1965 their remains were exhumed once again and reburied near the Stephen Mack house.
