New Campground Cemetery

William Mitchell Wilson and his wife Rebecca were charter members of the first Methodist church, organized at their home in 1830. Rebecca Wilson was the daughter of Thomas and Lucy Lawson Wilson and first cousin of her husband, William. In early 1823 William and Rebecca settled on a portion of the 4800 acre land grant and April 6, 1823 their son, Thomas D. Wilson was born, the first white child in what would soon be Obion County. Col. Wilson's home was also scene of the organization of the county and court met there until the courthouse was built. Col. Wilson donated 14 acres for a church and cemetery which has been known as Campground for many years. He died in 1837 and Rebecca in 1885; both are buried at Campground.
The cemetery consist of two parts. The "Old Campground Cem.", the larger one extending about 0.25 mi. deep into the woods, is further south & on the east side of Campground Rd. [GPS: 36.31498, -89.19606 ] The "New Campground Cem." is still active & is on a slightly elevated plot, nearer to Troy & on the west side of the road. [GPS: 36.31697, -89.19673 ] Both cemeteries have name signs visible from the road.
