The apex of the knoll was primarily used for burials, while the north facing base was used for the burial of unknown persons and criminals. The new Golden Cemetery was opened in late 1873. Newspaper announcements by the cemetery sexton in 1873 and 1875 stated that movement of bodies from the old cemetery to the new cemetery, by family members was commencing. By December 1875 a concerned citizen voiced the fact that many of the people buried in the old cemetery were from the ranches in the canyons west of Golden, and had no family to initiate the re-interment process.
Sexton George K. Kimball published a notice in the local Colorado Transcript newspaper in May of 1888 stating:
"There are many lots occupied in the new cemetery for which no money has been received or deed issued, of which all such lots are liable to be occupied by charity or unknown persons."
In 1951 the city of Golden approved the building of a subdivision on the knoll of the old cemetery with the contractor promising to relocate all bodies found on the property to the Golden City Cemetery.
