Sacred Heart Cathedral
Bendigo, Greater Bendigo City, Victoria, Australia
Underneath The City's Stunning Sacred Heart Cathedral, Is A Very Solemn Place - The Crypt. In It, The Bodies Of The Sandhurst Diocese's Six Former Bishops Are Interred.
Martin Crane, Stephen Reville, John McCarthy, Bernard Stewart, Noel Daly And Joe Grech Were All Laid To Rest In The Crypt, Although The First Three Were Exhumed From The Bendigo Cemetery And Re - Interred In The Crypt In 1974, After It Was Built.
The Crypt Sits Under The St Joseph's Chapel, To The Right Of The Sanctuary Up The Front Of The Cathedral. The Chapel Itself Features A Statue Representing The Buried Christ That Was Originally Housed At The Former St. Aidan's Orphanage In Kennington. During The Funerals Of Bishops Joe Grech In 2011, Noel Daly In 2004, And Bernard Stewart In 1988, Their Coffins Were Lowered Through The Marble Floor of St Joseph's Chapel And Into The Crypt. To Access The Crypt, Large Slabs Of Marble Are Lifted From The Chapel Floor With Big Suction Caps, And A Ladder Is Commandeered.
The Crypt Is About Three Metres High And The Same Octagon Shape And Size As The Chapel Above It.
Noticeable For Its Simplicity, The Floor Is Made Of Simple Concrete And Wiring For Features Above Runs Across The Ceiling. There Are At Least 12 Concrete Shelves In The Crypt, Two On Each Of Six Walls, And With The Possibility Of Room Above For Six More. The Six Shelves That House The Bishops Have Been Bricked Up With Some Of The Pile Of Simple Mission Brown Bricks That Takes Up Most Of One Wall.
Small, Modest Plaques Mark The Final Resting Places Of The Six Bishops, Highlighting Not The Dates Of Their Birth Or Their Death, But The Time They Served As Bishops. Although Simple And Plain, The Final Resting Place Of The Former Bishops Is Somehow Solemn.
