Liberty Cemetery was originally located on White Street (now Ivy Avenue) in Winston-Salem. In 1940, the cemetery was moved in order to allow for the widening of White Street and 11th Street. The new location was a part of the Forsyth County farm, which was later sold to Hanes Hosiery Mills. Company officials did not know the cemetery was there, and leased that part of the land to a cattle breeder. The cemetery is now identified and fenced, but few headstones remain.
When the graves were moved to this location, there was no distinction among individual graves. All were placed in three trenches, and the stones were placed like pavers or tiles. Even in the original cemetery, headstones had been scattered, and it was difficult to determine which graves they went with. After the move, many stones were vandalized or taken, some used as pavers in neighboring homes. The headstones remaining today have been lined up in rows, but there is no correlation between any headstone and a grave location.
Some graves from the old Liberty Cemetery were not moved here, but to other cemeteries in the area.
