La Muralla Cemetery
Cameron County, Texas, USA
The wire fence was falling down, and many markers had fallen over. It was difficult to determine the number of graves, and the dates were not legible on most. Approximately 30 markers were still standing.
All legible headstones were transcribed in 2001.
La Muralla is indeed a very difficult cemetery to find and get to. Coordinates are 25.9994, -97.6117. To get there you take the farm field road westward, just south of the highways 281/1421 intersection, at the big water tower. You follow the road all the way to the big levee (.82 miles) and turn right (north) at the well-head, just a few feet before the levee and proceed northward for about .7 miles. As of May, 2014 there were some graded pull-outs along the road (beginning at about .6 miles) and at the third one (about .7 miles) you stop. The cemetery is not visible from the road and is about 100 feet to the east, in a grove of trees, including several palms. There is a slight clearing eastward from the pull-out area that allows easier access to the north side and the only real access to the cemetery. It is now on government-owned land and former land-owners say they had understood that govt. would provide a direct access road to the cemetery from the levee, but so far that has not happened.
