PIERCE FAMILY CEMETERY.
This cemetery is abandoned now. Back in the late 1940's when my grandfather, Ira Edgar Pierce went with my dad, Warrant Officer Gerald Dupree Pierce and myself to the cemetery their were more markers than now. The missing markers were stolen. I can remember Ira showing us were his mother & father (Phoebe Ann Cannon Pierce & James Pierce} and his Grandfather and Grandmother {Thomas & Betsey Roberts Pierce} were buried. Granddad did not have to read the markers. Dad would look at the markers as granddad told him who was buried there. Then granddad started walking around looking at the ground. He told dad that there were markers missing and who they were.
Granddad walked to the back of the cemetery and looked over the fence and pointed out other graves. He said that these were the slaves that were buried here, and he named them.
As far as I know now {1 January 2014} I was the last one to pay to have this cemetery cleaned up in the mid 1990's. When I cleaned it up later on in the 1990's, and used a probe. I found markers in the ground. Two were about eighteen inches down and two were about eleven inches down. these four were for Thomas & Betsey Pierce and James & Phoebe Pierce. There were other markers with no names and Marble bases for head stones that were missing.
The Pierce Family Cemetery is on a hillside close to where the old home place of Thomas and Betsey Pierce. Their home burned down.
The home of Thomas Pierce and Betsey Roberts Pierce was on top of a hill about three tenths {3/10's} of a mile from Big Sandy Creek. About a mile as a crow would fly from Stephensville, GA.
The mailing address has been Toomsboro, Stephensville & back to Toomsboro, Ga.
[Stephensville, Ga. was at the intersection of Toomsboro Road & the Old Hawkinsville Road. The Old Hawkinsville Road is now Georgia State Highway 112.]
