New Hope Methodist Church

Photo taken about 2001. New Hope Cemetery was originally the Turner Family Cemetery. James Turner donated the original 2 acres of land for the New Hope Methodist Church, and the adjoining cemetery in 1869, shortly before his death. A church had already been meeting in this area for many years, and the cemetery which was originally the Turner family cemetery also held the graves of many neighbors by the time the land was donated for the church. Additional land for a cemetery expansion, was purchased from the Yarbrough family at a later date. This cemetery has a large number of graves that are no longer marked.

New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery has an extremely large number of unmarked graves. The "old timers" for many years said that all of the areas between the markers are filled with graves, and sure enough when an attempt was made to bury someone in this area in the past, an old grave was accidentally disturbed. This photo is taken from the right side of the church building. The latter burials are for the most part in the distance, and can be seen looking back toward the church from another photo that is posted.
