The Shofner Cemetery was established circa 1814 and, it is believed that the land for the church and cemetery was given by Martin Shofner. It should NOT be confused with the Shofner Lutheran Cemetery located nearby. It is approximately 300 feet square and is fenced. It is surrounded by active cow pastures. The cemetery is located on private land and is accessed only with permission of the property owners (three brothers: Wes, Stewart & Michael Shofner). A church was present on the parcel, but it burned sometime in the mid 1800s. At that time, a decision was made to relocate the church to a more convenient location. In the early 1870s, the Shofner Luthern Church and Cemetery was established immediately adjacent to a roadway that is now Highway 41A/16. Over the years, some burials were relocated from the Shofner Cemetery to the new Shofner Luthern Cemetery. Observed (extant) markers in the Shofner Cemetery date from 1826 through 1899. Eight of the 36 noted headstones reflect burials that occurred after the Shofner Luthern Cemetery had been established.
Unmarked graves and simple fields stones are present in this cemetery. According to the property owners, slaves were buried in this cemetery as well. Those graves are reported to be on the left side of the cemetery as you enter the gate.
One field stone is clearly marked "E E." It is believed that this was a member of the Euless family, given its close proximity to other Euless family members.
This cemetery has been surveyed at least twice. It is included in Cemetery Records of Bedford County, TN (Helen & Timothy Marsh; pg. 310-311). From the copyright date of their book, it would seem that the cemetery was surveyed sometime before 1976.
Then, in 1990, it was inventoried by the East Middle School (Tullahoma, TN). As part of their inventory, efforts were made to clean, map, and photograph the cemetery. Stone Mounment Company (Charlie & Larry Stone) was also apparently part of the project - they pulled some of the headstones and reset them in cement. Contained in the written report about their project, someone noted that they built a walkway with stones.
While inventoried at least twice, no known digital photographs exist for these stones (until now).
Access to the cemetery was graciously granted to us by Mr. Martin Shofner of ArchitectSure (Nashville). We visited the cemetery on 22 and 23 October 2010. For those markers that were chalked, each were rinsed thoroughly with clean water. We made every effort to leave the cemetery in "as found" condition.
