RELOCATED April 2005 to: Hillcrest Cemetery, Buford, Gwinnett County, Georgia USA (GPS: 34.12080685, -84.01486323)
ADD INFO:
Burton Earl Crawford was born in 1810 in Elbert Co., GA. In 1830, he married Lucy Tinsley Gaines. According to the 1850 US FED Census, they were still living in Elbert Co. Between 1850 and 1860, Burton and his family moved to Suwanee, Gwinnett Co., GA. They remained there until they died. Burton, his wife, Lucy, along with their daughter, Francis Crawford Adams, were buried on their homestead. Their graves were located in the northwest corner of Duluth Hwy (SR 120) and Meadow Church Way, now in Duluth, GA (approximate GPS coordinates: 33.979071, -84.102899).
In 2004, the property owner wanted to develop the land and requested a burial disturbance permit under Georgia's 1991 Abandoned Cemetery Act. The request was approved upon completion of an archaeological survey to determine the number of graves and cemetery limits. The archaeologists determined that in addition to the three marked graves of Burton Crawford, wife, Lucy, and daughter, Francis, there were 4 unmarked graves belonging to 1 adult and 3 children.
In 2005, the same archaeological firm, Brockington and Associates, excavated and relocated the graves to the Hillcrest Cemetery in Buford, GA. The same tombstones/footstones designate their current location (GPS coordinates: 34.12080685, -84.01486323). The original burial site is now a condominium community.
