The Hogan Cemetery is a small family cemetery, located just to the east of the village of Modesto in Macoupin County, Illinois. When coming to the cemetery from the north, take Hwy 111 south from Waverly in Morgan County, Illinois to Modesto in Macoupin County, Illinois (about 8 miles). From Modesto, take State Street East (Co Rd 13, a.k.a. 9 mile Rd) out of Modesto and just prior to Co. Rd 13's junction at Peach Rd, if there are no crops in the fields, you should be able to see the Hogan Cemetery off to your left...it is located about an 1/8th of a mile out in the middle of a field...there are no signs to mark the cemetery and there is no access road leading to the cemetery...When I visited this cemetery on a warm sunny day in January of 2012, there were no crops to contend with and the land owner was in the process of clearing the brush from around the banks of a drainage ditch that runs through the fields to the south of the cemetery. I was driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle, so I was able to reach the cemetery by following the farmers path through the field, made by his heavy equipment used to clear the brush...to his credit, the owner had also set fire to the brush in the heavily over-grown cemetery, which cleared it out nicely, so I was able to take photos of most of the Grave Markers that remain...apparently there had at one time been a fence around the cemetery but all that remained were the fence posts. It was still a little hard to maneuver around some of the overgrowth that remained but I was able to identify and photograph approximately 20-25 of the remaining markers in this neglected cemetery...the oldest marker found was for a death in 1838 and the latest burial was in 1938...
FYI: The cemetery you will most likely see 1st, off to the right, at the junction of Co. Rd 13 & Peach Rd is the public "Blue Grass Cemetery", the "Hogan Cemetery" is a family cemetery located out in the middle of a field, about 1/4th mile to the north west of the Blue Grass Cemetery and depending on the time of the year and the height of the crops, one can be seen from the other...As to the name of this cemetery, I have not been able to find info on a "Hogan Cemetery" listed in the Macoupin County Cemetery lists...I found the cemetery name and was able to identify a few of the burials, while researching the early settlers of Macoupin County, Illinois in a History of the Hogan and Coots families that immigrated to the North Palmyra Township area of Macoupin County, Illinois from Kentucky in the early 1830's...mrbrtsn
