Lane Farm Family Cemetery
Also known as Hickory Grove Plantation Cemetery
Cove City, Craven County, North Carolina, USA
It was chosen as the burial spot for Doug and Ann Whitlow for several reasons:
1. The need to be buried in North Carolina where their children and grandchildren live.
2. The farm and cemetery have a strong family connection to Ann Lane Whitlow. Ann's father grew up in the Lane farmhouse.
The Lane Farmhouse has an interesting history and legacy. The following is from The Historic Architecture of New Bern and Craven County. "The farm and farmhouse known as Hickory Grove was built by John Harris probably for his oldest son Steven Harris, Sr. and his wife Mary Bryan around 1800-1810. He died in 1801 and left the farm to his son John, Ownership of the house passed to the Lane family, probably through the marriage of Steven Harris's niece, Julia Harris (1803-1852) to John Tunnell Lane.
It is not known when the picture of the original Farmhouse was taken. It was provided by Richard Berry Lane, Jr., Great, Great Grandson of John Tunnell Lane.
The current owner, Vernice Hoyle, purchased the farm in 1991 from the children of William Bryan Green Lane (John Tunnell Lane's grandson)
The Lane farmhouse and family cemetery were visited many times with Ann's parents. At the time of the visits, the Farmhouse had been abandoned for many, many years but was still standing. The Farmhouse was walked through with her father, mother, and brother. Because of its history and legacy," Preservation North Carolina" asked for and was granted the right to claim some of the wood framing before the house collapsed.
The family is very grateful for the transformation Vernice made to the farm and the care she gave and continues to give to the cemetery. The family felt there was a special spirit attending the farm, a genuine feeling of God's glory and peace. The family was so Happy when Vernice gave her permission for Ann and Doug to be buried there. Vernice is a very Kind and gracious lady. She has a God-inspired vision for the farm. One that sees the farm as a safe habitat for all God's creatures, one that wants to preserve the heritage of those that previously lived and farmed there.
The following information was extracted from the North Carolina Land Records:
Frederick Lane (Ann's great, great, grandfather) received 4 grants totaling 729 acres from 1787 to 1791 from the king of England:

Family Cemetery
At one time, some tombstones were destroyed by a very large oak tree that stood in the middle of the graveyard. At some point, the owner had the tree removed and the graveyard cleaned up as it had been overgrown.
There are currently (July 2021) 34 tombstones in the family cemetery. It is also known from the tombstone's inscriptions in the family cemetery that the following descendants of Frederick Lane are buried there: , Laura Lane the wife of William Bryan Lane (his grandson) (Ann's great grandmother) and William Green Bryan Lane (his great Grandson) (Ann's grandfather), Mary Bryan (his Granddaughter) (Ann's 4th cousin), Elizabeth J Lane (his great, great, granddaughter))Ann's 4th cousin), Bertha Tucker Lane (wife of his great grandson)(Ann's 2ndt cousin) Bettie Bryan (his granddaughter),(Ann's 3rd cousin) Julia A.
