The building was constructed on land purchased from the Abel family in 1916, and was completed in early 1918. It was part of the American Mausoleum Movement, a popular interest that started in 1907. Promoters marketed mausoleums in communities as an alternate internment choice. Subscriptions were sold, and when enough money had been raised, construction on the buildings began.
The center portion of this mausoleum is designed to serve as a chapel. Windows are graced with stained glass. The super structure of the building that holds 232 crypts is reinforced concrete. The interior is made of Vermont marble and mosaic tile. The outside is constructed of native Indiana limestone.
Outside to the left of the front door stands a columbarium that also belongs to the mausoleum. It is a structure that respectfully holds the urns and ashes of those who chose to be cremated.
The building has been recently restored. Before and after pictures are posted. The Auburn Mausoleum Association received final approval late spring 2014 that the building was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
