The area around South Gloucester was settled in the early 1830s by Catholic Irish, many of whom worked on the construction of the Rideau Canal. A wooden church was built as early as 1830 in the area of South Gloucester. On the 21st of February, 1846 Patrick (John) O'Dougherty [O'Dougherty] sold a parcel of land `... four acres, more or less, being composed of part of lot number twenty-eight in the fourth concession of the Township of Gloucester, Rideau Front.` to the Roman Catholic Church. In 1849 construction began on a new stone church on this site. The church was formally blessed in 1852 as St. Mary's. The parish and the church were later renamed `Our Lady of the Visitation.` In the 1879 Atlas of Carleton County Lot 28, IV Concession Rideau Front, was owned by `Geo. J. O'Doroughty` likely a descendant.
