Add PhotosThe city of Bad Berleburg (called only Berleburg until it became a spa on July 1st, 1971) was created in todays form in 1975 when 23 small towns and villages were combined. Those former villages now form the districts of the city, with many of them maintaining their historic cemeteries.
The main cemetery of Bad Berleburg is this one here in the district of Sengelsberg. It has several war graves, as well as an area designated as the burial spot for members of the aristocratic House of Sayn-Wittgenstein. Many princes and dukes and their families are buried here. The cemetery is about 400 years old, the chapel was built in 1632. It displays several wooden plaques with the names of fallen soldiers, sons of the city, who died in the wars during the centuries (War of 1866, German-French war of 1870/71, First and Second World Wars). A section of graves of foreign "forced labor workers" can also be found here.

Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (30 years for the cemeteries in Bad Berleburg) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
