Add PhotosThe cemetery site is located on a private farm just off of business route #10 about 3 miles northwest of Smithfield. It is heavily overgrown and shows severe damage from hurricane Isabel. Volunteers performed a minor cleanup in the main cemetery. A large tree in the main cemetery has fallen causing much damage to three graves. Another large tree has fallen outside the main cemetery and it has uprooted two more graves. Much more cleanup remains to be done and possibly heavy equipment needs to be brought in to remove downed trees and haul away limbs, stumps and other debris.
A unique characteristic of this cemetery is the use of musket barrels as a fencing material … there were approximately 500 of these barrels inserted vertically between top and bottom iron rails. Although due to vandalism, only about 260 remain intact in the fence. Thirteen graves were identified in the fenced-in area and two other graves were identified outside the main cemetery.
