Add PhotosIn 1897, over 120 years after the massacre, a group of South Carolina historians visited the site and opened the graves. Landrum says that they verified the hasty first burial and reburied the bones. They cleared the ground, placed head and foot stones over the graves, and covered the mound with white sand. At that time a dirt road gave access to the cemetery, which was surrounded by a grove of huge oak trees. In later years, the DAR placed a historical marker on the spot, but when the dirt road was closed, the marker was moved to the South Tyger River bridge on Highway 29, a few miles east of Greer, S.C. The graves are still there today, undisturbed.
