According to the "History of Genesee County, Michigan With Illustrations and Biographical Skethes of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers". Everts & Abbott, Philadelphia, 1879, "a farm of one hundred and three acres, being part of the southwest quarter of section 29, in the township of Burton" was purchased on 16 October 1846 for use as a poor farm.
