Add PhotosThe canvass and survey was in May of 1984. Adding to the confusion is that there are actually two Caney cemeteries, and most entries that were canvassed by Tyner as being in Chambers Memorial Garden (which is two miles east of Tailholt) are entered into FAG as being in the Caney Cemetery at or near Tahlequah. (?)
It appears that there are multiple memorials which were placed by the Tyner team as being interred in this cemetery, have been entered on Find A Grave, as being at the "Caney Cemetery" in Tahlequah. I'm not sure that is correct. Perhaps there has been a merger of the two cemeteries, or the cemetery he recorded has now been annexed and is part of one of the Caney cemeteries? Noting that there also appears to be two Cherokee County "Chambers" cemeteries - Chambers Memorial Gardens and Chambers Cemetery.
Identified by the Tyner team in their canvass and survey from the American Indian Institute; "Our People And Where They Rest," James W. Tyner, and Alice Tyner Timmons, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. 1969-1985 Volume 12, p. 15. (Library of Congress No. A-304793, et al.)
Their information (including any diagrams or maps) is given here as a historical reference and is presented "as is." Their book, like many such cemetery listing compilations, may contain errors. As with any genealogy information, this is merely a "source" and should be considered as such. It falls upon the end-user to verify the accuracy. See their map for use as a quick locator tool for graves here. The set of books are available at many Oklahoma libraries. Once freely available for online viewing, the OPAWTR volumes can now be accessed only at a LDS Family History Library, a partner library, or a Family History Center. (LDS)
