Beguin-Opitz Cemetery
Hitchcock, Galveston County, Texas, USA
She and Alvin Opitz were married from 1887 – 1891 when Alvin died. They had three children, but all three died during infancy, and were buried in the family cemetery along with another child and five adults. The burials are dated from 1880 to 1951 and are members of David Henry Beguin's extended family, all related by four marriages. The burials include: David Henry Beguin, his first wife Louise, his second wife Margaret and their infant, Margaret's second husband Alvin Opitz, Alvin's second wife Mary Josephine and their three infants.
Mrs. Opitz remembered that there were some slave graves nearby but that a storm in 1935 washed them away. There is evidence in tax records that David H. Beguin owned as many as nine slaves.
There could be more burials at this location, but it would take a concentrated clean-up effort and probing to find buried stones. The cemetery is close to Highland Bayou and has been flooded and vandalized over the years. In 2010 only one small section of the D. H. Beguin stone and the flat marker for Margaret Opitz could be found. There were several sections of granite curbing and foundations present at that time. It is thought that some of the related Tacquard family members were buried along the bayou in this general area, but the burial ground was destroyed or covered over when the bayou was widened in 1942 by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The 130 acre tract was known as Opitz Woods and was operated for many years as Opitz Park. Many excursionists from Galveston rode to Hitchcock on the Santa Fe train to spend their leisure time at the park.
