Add PhotosAnother serious mine cave has occurred on the Mountain road above the Shawnee Cemetery. The Subsidence is due to mine caves in the old workings of the Washington Mine of the Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. This is the second settling that has taken place in that at vicinity within the past month and the last settling which occurred the forepart of this week, has affected the Independent Polish Cemetery. The first subsidence was noticed about one month ago, when it pulled in the main road and shut off all traffic. The coal company had a force of men at work since the cave, filling in the cavity in the road and shut off all traffic. The Coal company had a force of men at work since the cave, filling in the cavity in the road, but did not succeed in getting it filled before another cave happened and pulled the road in again. The cave which occurred this week pulled in a portion of the Independent Polish Cemetery and leaving the caskets in the cemetery exposed. There are two large holes in the cemetery, one of them is about eighty feet deep. If the thaw and rainy weather continues they are bound to be further settleings in the cave zone and will redoubt reach some of the adjoining properties. The Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. is doing everything in its power to check any further caving and the company has a force of men at work day and night making every effort to stop the settling. Published -W-B Record newspaper on 3-13-1920, page 30.
Removing Bodies from Cemetery
In a second newspaper article published - W-B Rec. - 3-25-1920 it is said that owing to the caving in of a portion of the Independent Polish Cemetery on the Mountain, the members of that church have found it necessary to have the bodies removed. A new cemetery has been procured in West Nanticoke, a short distance below Edge Hill Cemetery. The cave in is due to the workings of the Washington Mines of Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. In many instances the bodies were exposed and in some instances the caskets went down with the cave. the contract of removing the bodies has been awarded to Grontowski Bros., Funeral Home of West Main Street, Plymouth, who have already began the work. Grontowski's is still in operation today, they were located in the flood plain, so I am not aware if their older records were lost or not, one would have to contact them.
