The Tett Family Cemetery was established in 1876, when Benjamin Tett purchased the property from William and Sarah Bilton. The legal description of the Tett Cemetery according to the original deed was, in part, as follows: "Half an acre, be the same more or less, being composed of part of lot number one in the fifth concession of the said township of North Crosby, which said tract or parcel of land is butted and bounded….on the southerly side of the Westport and Farmersville Toll road, at the northeast angle of the English Church Burial Ground…." It is not known for certain why Benjamin Tett decided to establish a family cemetery, although it is believed that this action was taken following a dispute with Reverend Stearne Tighe who had threatened to excommunicate Benjamin and not allow him to be buried in the church cemetery. Bishop Mills some years later consecrated the Tett Cemetery with a service attended by friends and members of the family.
