Add PhotosThe Skirmish - Battle at Greenleaf Prairie began on 16th June 1863, and involved Confederate forces under Command of Colonel Charles DeMorse, and Federal troops under Command of Colonel Stephen Wattles.
In early summer, the Confederate Colonel Stand Waite, a Cherokee, had raided advancing Federal forcers under Colonel William A. Phillips, at Fort Gibson, and was forced to retreat south toward Confederate headquarters below the Arkansas River. In an effort to cut off the Confederate retreat, Phillips dispatched Col. Wattles with a howitzer and 300 to 400 troops, comprised of a mixture of infantry and cavalry with both Anglo and Native American officers, to the point where it was thought the Confederates would ford the river. Hearing of Watie's situation, Confederate command attempted to distract Col. Phillips by firing artillery on Federal positions and dispatching Col. DeMorse with force of Texas and Choctaws to cross the river and protect Watie's retreat.
Although Col. Wattles passed near where Col.DeMorse was fording the river, his scouts did not notify him of Col. DeMorse's, presence until the next morning. Therefore, the action initially failed to divert attention from Col. Watie.
Col. DeMorse and his men " camped " … in some timber near the edge of a small prairie adjacent to Greenleaf Prairie. In the morning, they moved to hillside in the west of Greenleaf Prairie and conducted reconnaissance missions in the direction of Federal force.
Greenleaf Prairie, is now part of The Camp Gruber Training Center, Army National Guard ( CGTC).
It is one of three recorded engagements during the Civil War.
