O.H. Simmons Cemetery
Stokes County, North Carolina, USA
This cemetery obviously had been forgotten and the area was overgrown in trees with decades of growth. The area was clear cut in 2017, revealing the cemetery again. A local resident pointed it out, while researching adjacent property owned once by the Tilley family. O.H. Simmons expressed in his will, how much to spend on the wall, and how to build it. It is a site to see. Care was taken while clearing the area. Damage had been done over time, with fallen trees. The wall needs some repair, but is 99% in tact. There seems to be another grave within the wall. There seem to be 6-8 or more outside the wall.
There were two very tall trees left, which are within the wall, at the foot of O.H. Simmons' grave.
From his will:
. And at my wife's death five hundred for tomb stones for my self and my wife and my mother. Three hundred for building stone wall round the ground where we are buried. And if I do not have tomb stones plow at my fathers and brothers graves while I live one hundred dollars more of my money is to be laid out in tomb stones for their graves
One small stone was found broken. There seems to be only the large stone for O H Simmons himself.
Walter L Tilley was the administrator.
