Archaeologists employed by a private landowner have delineated at least nine ( or eleven, three of which are children) graves at the site, known as the Orr Property or Hall Plantation, according to a news release from the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs .Archaeologists in Delaware have discovered the gravestone of a Civil War soldier that may provide a vital clue in uncovering a long-lost African-American cemetery.
Experts working at a property near Frankford, Sussex County, found the headstone bearing the name "C.S. Hall" and the details "Co. K, 32nd U.S.C.T." This refers to Company K of the 32nd U.S. Colored Troops, There are stories of shackles and chains on abandoned buildings in the area, an old shed that may once have been a slave house and a potential plot of African-American graves once marked with conch shells that she and others suspect has since been masked over by encroaching vegetation.
