Add PhotosAccording to British History Online, the Black Friars (Dominicans) were established in Chester by 1237 or 1238. From their earliest years, they discouraged burial at the friary and agreed "to take only a third of the burial dues of those who wished to be buried within the precincts but would customarily have been buried in the graveyards of St. John's or St. Werburgh's." A small friary, it was surrendered on 15 August 1538 to Bishop Richard Ingworth of Dover near the time of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. The friary was situated in an area surrounded by Watergate Street on the north, Nicholas Street on the east, Walls' Lane on the south, and the city wall on the west. The burial sites are believed to have been in the southwest part of the property. The buildings have not survived to the present time.
