This cemetery marks the resting places of Robert Johnson (1779-1853), his wife Mary Gilmour Johnson (1788-1873), Eliza Cochrane (1814-1847), Eliza's son William Cochrane (1835-1861), Mary Ann Preston Elder (1840-1866) and J. Millage and others.

Robert and Mary Gilmour came from Ireland via New York and first settled on swampy land in Cavan Township in 1820, but moved to 100 acres in Smith Township later that year. By 1854, Robert and his family of eight owned 600 acres in the 5th, 6th and 7th Concessions.

Robert and Mary's son, Robert Jr., bought all of Lot 24, 5th Concession from his father in 1848. He sold it to John Bickell in March of 1873 "save and except thereout and therefrom one acre be the same more or less set apart and fenced in and used for a burial ground", because the cemetery was already established there.

The Johnson-Bickell cemetery was restored by the former Smith Township in 1977, and again by Selwyn Township in 2013-15. There is an exhibit describing the residents of the cemetery. The exhibit was sponsored by the Selwyn Township Municipal Heritage Committee.
