This cemetery opened in 1871 when Rothenditmold was still an independent village, which was incorporated into the city of Kassel in 1936. The cemetery is 4.8 acres in size.
The oldest marker dates back to 1867. Jacob Wassmuth's remains were relocated to this cemetery when his wife Lisette died in 1909.
There is a small chapel for funeral services. Across the chapel is a war grave area with mass graves containing the remains of about 1600 civilian victims of World War II killed in 1943 and 1944. Many of them remain unknown. Their remains are buried in mass graves 12-20 people each. No dates, only the names of about 1000 known victims are engraved on cross shaped markers . Another small World War I memorial commemorates the fallen soldiers of this district.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse can decompose naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 20-30 years. Otherwise the grave will be leveled and reused, the marker than used as gravel in road construction. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. Also the town or owner of the cemetery might find a grave of historical significance and will protect and keep it indefinitely.
