This cemetery was established between 1634 and 1643, making it the oldest cemetery in the city of Kiel. Originally only used for military burials, it was transferred to the Lutheran congregation in Kiel in 1948. Over time the cemetery lost its significance as newer and larger cemeteries were established in the city. The chapel, built in 1901 had to be torn down in 1999 as it had fallen into disrepair. The cemetery has seen its last burial in 2001. There is a war grave section, mainly of soldiers, who died during World War I. The oldest surviving grave marker dates back to 1738 (Maria Margretha Andresen), which is now displayed along the old cemetery wall.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (10-25 years in Kiel) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse can decompose naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period, the duration can be extended by another 10-25 years (once) in Kiel. Otherwise, the grave will be leveled and reused, the marker then used as gravel in road construction. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. Also, the town or owner of the cemetery might find a grave of historical significance and will protect and keep it indefinitely.
