Add PhotosSituated atop Cerro del Tepeyac within the Gustavo A. Madero Borough, the Chapel of the Roses, also recognized as the Chapel of Cerrito, has its origins dating back to the late 17th century. Its establishment is intertwined with the narrative of Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, who, in legend, collected roses as instructed by Our Lady of Guadalupe to present as evidence of her apparitions to Bishop Fray Juan de Zumarraga.
Initially, the site where the chapel now stands was marked only by a wooden cross atop a pile of stones. Around 1660, Don Cristóbal de Aguirre and Teresa Peregrina sponsored the construction of a hermitage at this location. By the early 18th century, the growing number of devotees prompted Presbyter Juan de Montúfar to commission the present-day temple's construction. Additionally, a southeast ramp was built to facilitate access to the area.
