Add PhotosThe Baskervilles/Baskervills were an old and prominent family from Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The Richmond Enquirer on Friday, September 5, 1828 had an article from Erasmus Kennon, chairman and Wm R Baskerville, Secretary, Mecklenburg County listing resolutions including that John T Baskervill, Charles Baskervill and others were to "be a Committee of Vigilance and Safety, to correspond with other Committees throughout the U. States and State of Virginia."
John Tabb Baskervill was born in Mecklenburg County Virginia February 17, 1802, and was on the personal property tax list in 1830 and 1831, but not in 1832, 1833, or 1835. He headed west and was probably the John T Baskervill enumerated in 1840 US Census in Madison County, Tennessee: a white male born 1799-1810 and the only other white person was a male born 1809-1820.
Around 1843 John T Baskervill married Margaret Payne Malone, the daughter of Booth Malone of Tippah County, Mississippi. John's and Margaret's son John Tabb Baskerville Jr was born in Tippah December 12, 1844, then in the later part of the 1840s the family settled in Fayette County, Tennessee. Their property was known as the "Walsedge" plantation.
John Tabb Baskervill was both a physician and a Methodist minister. In 1852 he officiated at the funeral of his neighbor Joseph Littlejohn, and wrote an article about the decedent:
John T Baskerville, "From the Memphis and Arkansas Christian Advocate," The Nashville and Louisville Christian Advocate, Nashville, Tennessee ,Thursday, 12 February, 1852, Page 4 , column 5.
Gravestones for John Tabb Baskervill, Margaret Payne (Malone) Baskervill, and John Tabb Baskervill Jr can be seen in the fenced in burial ground.
