The Village of Bakerton was est 1889 by founding fathers Col. Robert B Baker and John S.W. Holton both of the Sterling Coal Co.

Elmora as Bakerton is also known as, may have come from one of the original mines called the El Mora Mine. There is a theory that it was given this name because of the Post Office - because no two post offices could have the same name and there was already a "Bakerton Post Office" in this state.

Elmora aka Bakerton to this day still looks like an old coal mining town. It's like a step back in time - the side roads are breaking apart, a "coal" black dirt still covers most of these roads and can be very dirty and nasty in rain or snow.
