Shortly after the end of the Civil War, former slaves (who had previously been attending church with their owners at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, just down the road) organized their own church at its current site. It was named Big Bethel Baptist Church and started out as a brush arbor. Eventually a brick church was built. Big Bethel Baptist Church changed its name to Gathering of Champions Church International in 2002 to reflect the church's new mission, vision and ministry focus.
