PISGAH ASSOCIATE REFORMED
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

On this site stood Pisgah A.R.P. Church long before its organization in Pope County. The roots of Pisgah church were in the hearts and minds of its forebears who were a people of a book, the Bible. The forefathers in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Colonial America and the founders of Pisgah were also influenced by John Calvin, John Knox, Ebenezer Erskine and the Westminster Confession of Faith. Pisgah was organized by the Reverend John Patrick in Potts School House on Jan. 29, 1853. The 26 charter members had come in covered wagons from Pisgah Church in Gaston County, N. C. and Bethany Church in S. C. in the fall of 1851. But a trickle of these Scotch Irish had come from N. C. before 1842. John Falls, John Oates IV and James Quinn were elected elders. All three had been previously ordained there on Friday May 3, 1861. Later members of Pisgah moved toward two new locations. One group moved toward the Ark. River where Pisgah Church was built in 1877; the other group toward Potts Station where a church was begun in 1884. After this, preaching at Pisgah was discontinued. Other congregations emerging from Pisgah were churches at Havana, Russellville, and Little Rock. Pisgah was developed as a church yard cemetery for Pisgah Church.

The Reverend John Patrick was the founding minister of Pisgah A.R.P. Church. H was born Feb. 3, 1804 of "Irish Parentage" remarkable for their intelligence and piety. He was a farmer until 26 years of age, at which time he thought of becoming a minister. One day while standing between the handles of a plow, Patrick questioned "Am I pursuing my proper calling? Ought I not preach the Gospel?"
Since Scottish Presbyterian maintained their high educational standard for their ministers ever on the ever expanding wild frontiers of America Patrick soon entered school and began the study of Greek. After a course of four years He graduated from Jefferson College, Cannonbourgh, PA. He then pursued theological studies at the same place completing his course in 1841.
In great hardship self-denial and exposure, he itinerated among vacant churches and mission fields.
In the fall of 1852 he visited Pope County, Ark. where he preached for 13 weeks. The first service was held in the home of John Oats IV on Feb. 3, 1854. He married Miss Mary E. Patrick of Union County, S. C. He was slated supply of Pisgah1895 -60, 1863 – 67, but was never installed as pastor. He owned a home on Whig Creek near Bradley Cove. He died Feb. 23, 1875. He and his wife are buried with the covered wagon settlers not far from this marker.
