Add PhotosThe Convent of San Jerónimo, once known as the Convent of Our Lady of the Expectation, was a prominent Catholic temple in Mexico City. It housed Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a renowned Mexican poet. Acquired by the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana, it transitioned from an ecclesiastical site to become the Ex-Temple, serving as the primary auditorium of the UCSJ. This transformation retained its Baroque altarpieces and collections associated with Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
Constructed in the 16th century in the Herrerian Baroque style, the convent boasts a cruciform floor plan, a tower, belfry, semi-spherical dome, and two choirs. Additionally, it features six courtyards, notably the Great Cloister and the novice courtyard. Originating as a church in 1525, it expanded later to include a cloister, dormitory, refectory, cells, and an orchard under the patronage of Doña Marina de Zaldívar y Mendoza.
Across its history, the convent changed ownership multiple times and endured damage from floods and earthquakes. The Reform Laws of Benito Juárez in 1867 led to its disentailment and conversion into a military barracks. Over the 20th century, it served diverse purposes, including functioning as a theater and nightclub.
Later, archaeological investigations uncovered remains and artifacts, prompting restoration and its designation as a national and World Heritage site. Since then, it has served as a hub for cultural events, conferences, exhibitions, and concerts. In 2009, it was honored with the name "Divine Narcissus Auditorium," paying tribute to Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz's work.
Annually, the ex-temple gains attention for hosting the Monumental Day of the Dead Altar, a significant tradition within Mexico City's Historic Center.
