George M Work was a freed Negro slave. He came to this area, acquired land and dept it debt free.
After serving as a Sergeant in the Civil War, Mr Work, his Mother, three brothers and a sister came to Sumner County in 1872 from Illinois.
Mr. Work was born in N Carolina in 1840, the son of slaves, who were all freed in 1844.
When the family came to Sumner County, each one homesteaded a section of land, through grants issued by Pres U S Grant.
Sgt Geo M Work died in 1923. Other markers are his wife, Melissa 1861 - 1926; Garrett Work, Feb 6, 1897 - March 26, 1973; Earl Leon Nichols, April 11, 1894 - Feb 2, 1976, a son-in-law; Mayme E Johnson, 1890 - 1922, a daughter; Beverly E Rankin, March 27, 1917, a granddaughter; Flossie E Tinsley, May 1, 1901 - Aug 23, 1971, a daughter; John H Work, March 19, 1874 - 1951; Julius Work, born 1830, died 1887, and his wife Roxelena, born Nov 1, 1848, died Feb 15, 1928.
Nieces of Geo M Work, Birdie Lennox, 1909 - 1920; and Rachel, 1860 - 1891.
Names on other markers are Mary C Watts, Esther Work, Eliza Work, wife of Alexander Work; Minnie Work. The dates on these markers are not legible.
