EDGERLY GATEWAY of Modern times

This is the main entrance to the cemetery. Cemetery office is the small building as pictured on the other side of this entrance.

In 1887, a receiving vault of “of such ornamental and substantial character as to be a credit to the community” was erected. The receiving vault, built of deep red brick and terra cotta panels in a High Victorian Gothic design, was needed because the severe Iowa winters would often prevent the digging of graves for several months. This receiving vault is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tree used to make the new Civil War Memorial.

This is the new CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL at the Ottumwa Cemetery. It was carved from a big tree that was over 200 years old and just died completely this 2013~~
