Charles was the son of General Abner Forbes and Elizabeth (West) Forbes. On 30 May 1824 he married Persis Hatch Cheney in Newport, NH. She was the daughter of William and Tryphena (Hatch) Cheney. Charles ran a mercantile business in Boston, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Natchez. He died in Cincinnati and the FOBES family genealogy gives his burial as Old South Cemetery in Windsor. Charles and Persis were the parents of two children: Elizabeth West Forbes who married William Moore and were Baptist missionaries to Burma (they are buried next to Persis in Middleton, OH), and Charles M.
