Represented Victoria in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1875 to 1878
Born to James Douglas whom was born in British Guiyana to a Scottish planter father and a free woman of colour. His mother Amelia was the Anglo-Métis daughter of William Connolly, fur trader, and his Cree wife; she grew up at the Hudson Bay Company forts managed by her father.
Douglas was educated in Victoria. He served in the local militia. For a time, he studied law with John Foster McCreight. In 1877, Douglas married Mary, the daughter of Andrew Charles Elliott. Died in San Francisco at the age of 32. The Balwin Hotel, rm# 134, San Francisco.

This text refers to James Douglas (1803-1877), the *father* of James William Douglas (1851-1883), and Amelia Douglas née Connolly (1812-1890), his *mother*. James William Douglas, who was born in *Fort Victoria of the Hudson's Bay Company (now Victoria, British Columbia, Canada), and not in British Guiana, where James Douglas (1803-1877) was born.

The Reverend Staines duly christened him James William. He was the only one of the Douglas children to be given two names, one for his father and one for his maternal grandfather, William Connolly." [At this time, James & Amelia Douglas were living in Fort Victoria.]
