Agnes Douglas was born to James Douglas (1803-1877) and Amelia Douglas née Connolly (1812-1890) in Fort Vancouver of the Hudson's Bay Company (now Vancouver, Washington, United States). She moved with her family to Fort Victoria (now Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) on 6 June 1849. She attended the Academy for Young Ladies at Colwood Farm in about 1852 and enrolled at the Ladies Collegiate School (later called Angela College) in 1860. She was married to Arthur Thomas Bushby on 8 May 1862 by Bishop George Hill in Christ Church in Victoria. After Arthur Thomas Bushby's death on 18 May 1875, she resided in Victoria, California and England. At the time of her death on 10 January 1928, she lived in England with her daughter, Ella Gertrude 'Dot' Hopwood. She was buried in the Bushby family Plot 36 in the Old Church of England Cemetery in New Westminster, B.C. (now part of Fraser Cemetery). See the Record of Internment in the photos.

Please note that there is an Agnes Bushby = FindAGrave Memorial ID 26326872, who is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, B.C. This person had been incorrectly identified as the daughter of James Douglas and Amelia Douglas, and the spouse of Arthur Thomas Bushby. This Agnes Bushby was born in London, England, rather than Fort Vancouver, and died on 14 January 1929, rather than 10 January 1928. Several of the Family Member links of the relatives of Agnes Bushby née Douglas (1841-1928) on FindAGrave had pointed to this "false" Agnes Bushby; however, on 26 July 2020, the current manager of that Memorial deleted those links, and we are grateful for the cooperation.

Andrew Haines of the Fraser Cemetery was particularly helpful in identifying Plot 36, and providing the map showing its location and the Record of Internment.

Gravesite Details

In Plot 36, there are headstones for Agnes Bushby and daughter Amy Mary Matilda Bushby. The headstones for Arthur Thomas Bushby and Violet Carlotta Bushby née Brae are missing, although there is a base, presumably for ATB's headstone.
