On Christmas Day 1858, Bushby arrived via Panama in Victoria (colony of Vancouver Island), and on 8 Feb 1859, he entered the civil service in New Westminster (capital of the mainland colony of British Columbia), where he became registrar-general, postmaster-general, and county court judge. He married Governor James Douglas' daughter Agnes in May 1862. His journals (1856, 1858-9, 1860 1864, 1872-4) and musical compositions (1856-74) are held in the BC Provincial Archives.
