When Ellen and her husband married in York, PA, it was 11 months before the end of the Civil War. Shortly after finishing their wedding ceremony on 23 June 1864, the town was raided by "Rebs." The bride and groom fled, without any time to get their marriage certificate. In the raid's aftermath, all the church records were destroyed. Later by 1870 census the couple moved to NJ then between 1880-1888 had moved to Philadelphia. In 1888 the couple decided it was best to remarry, as to have some legal documentation for their marriage. So, in Philadelphia, on 6 September 1888 they remarried after 24 years of marriage.
