Edward J. Scherf (birth name Christian Eduard Erdmann Scherf) was born 24 Jun 1847 in Thüringen, Germany to father Christian Andreas Scherf and mother Ernestina "Menia" (Duenkel) Scherf. He enlisted into US Armed Forces 12 Feb 1864 in Oak Grove, Wisconsin. Discharged a Private 23 Oct 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin. Served with Co. L, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry. He is the husband of Mary Ellen (Hayes) Scherf.
