He was born Oct. 14, 1907, in Auburn, the son of Charles Edward and Nellie Mae Cowan Vancil. He married E. Fran Greer in 1931. Mr. Vancil had been a resident of Springfield since 1922. He was a member of First Christian Church, Central Lodge No. 71 AF&AM, Springfield Consistory, (receiving the meritorious service award), Springfield Chapter No. 1, Springfield Council No. 2, Elwood Commandery No. 6 Knights Templar, Ansar Shrine, Ansar director staff, Ansar Shrine Retirees Club and Soward of Bunker Hill and was a charter member of Capital City Shrine Club. He was dad adviser of Stephen A. Douglas Chapter, Order of DeMolay, from 1961-1973 and was a member of the Honorary Legion of Honor, Cross of Honor and Hats Off Order of DeMolay, Guild of the Leather Apron, Rainbow Grand Cross of Color, Divernon American Legion Post No. 278, American Motorcyclist Association. He belonged to the National Rifle Association and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
Mr. Vancil was a former state Flyweight Boxing Champion. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed by Henson Robinson Co. for more than 20 years and retired from the secretary of state's office in 1989 after 26 years.
Survivors: wife, E. Fran; a son, Mike R. Vancil of Morgan Hill, Calif.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Florin (Vivian) Barton of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: 1;30 p.m. Friday, Vancil Memorial Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Carolyn Watkins officiating. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
