Mrs. John L. Lewis Dies in East; Rites Here Saturday

Mrs. Myrta Bell Lewis, 62, wife of John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers of America, died early yesterday at her home in Alexandria, Va., following an illness of several months. She had undergone a series of major operations at John Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Lewis was born at Stafford, Monroe county, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. J. C. F. Bell a country physician, and Mrs. Bell.

When she moved with her parents to Lucas, Ia., a mining town, she became interested in the cause of labor. She attended Iowa State Teachers college. While teaching in the Lucas public schools, she met John L. Lewis and they were married in Iowa on June 5, 1907. Mrs. Lewis was well known among members of organized labor and often attended U.M.W.A. conventions with her husband.

At the bedside when she died were her husband and daughter, Miss Kathryn Lewis, Alexandria, Va., who is secretary-treasurer of District 50 of the United Mine Workers; one son, John L. Lewis, jr., a medical student at Johns Hopkins university; two sisters, Mrs. C. P. Charrier, Boise, Idaho; and Mrs. R. O. Miller, jr., Springfield; and three brothers, J. R. Bell and C. H. Bell, both of Arlington, Va.; and F. C. Bell, Indianapolis, Ind. A third child, Margaret Louise, died in 1917.

The funeral party will leave Washington for Springfield this afternoon and the remains of Mrs. Lewis will arrive here tomorrow via the Alton railroad. They will be taken to the family residence at West Lawrence avenue where funeral services will be held Saturday. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
