Memorial of John Saxton of Digby Twp., Annapolis Co., Nova Scotia, yeoman, ("now of Woodhouse, Upper Canada - 20 Aug 1811" [[ inserted 13 months after original draft of petition ]]) "desirous of removing to … Upper Canada, provided he can there obtain … Royal Bounty in Lands which he has not received in Nova Scotia. And along with [[ him ]], three of his neighbors, Samuel Edison, Moses Edison and James Wilson, loyal persons of good credit and substance, are also desirous to remove with their families to Upper Canada." Samuel Edison, gentlemen, age 60 years or older [[ age 75 ]], married, and proprietor of real property, inhabits one house on 100 acres, with 60 acres improved, at Lot 15 Concession 3, Bayham Twp, London District, Upper Canada (now Elgin Co., Ontario), residing with one married female, age 14-44 [[ presumably his second wife, Elizabeth Yocum Cook, age 43 ]], and four children (three boys, age 6-13; one girl, age 6-13, one single male, age 14-17, and one single male, age 21-29), two are natives of USA, seven are natives of Canada of British origin, and all nine are of a religious denomination not enumerated in the census.

Edison, Samuel Ogden, Sr. 1767–1865. Grandfather of TAE. Son of John Edison and Sarah Ogden. Born in Essex County, New Jersey, he moved with his family to Nova Scotia after the American Revolution. He married Nancy Simpson (1769–1821) on November 14, 1792. They had eight children: Marcellus (1794–1849), John (1796–1824), Thomas, David, Henry M., Samuel Ogden Jr., Eliza (Secord) (ca. 1807–1827) and Snow. Shortly after the birth of their youngest child, the family moved to Bayham Township in Elgin County, Ontario, where they helped establish the town of Vienna. After the death of his first wife, Samuel married Elizabeth Yokum (1799–1890) on September 5, 1825. They had five children: Simeon Ogden, Mahlon Burwell, Elizabeth Jane (Putnam) (b. 1830), Fordice Warner, and Charles Oscar. As a child TAE frequently spent part of the summer at his grandfather's home in Vienna.
