Mrs. Hon. A. W. Acheson Dies at Her Home in Washington, Pennsylvania
----------------------------------------------------

The following notice of the death of Mrs. Hon. A. W. Acheson, mother of Dr. A. W. Acheson of this city. is taken from the Washington, Pa.; Reporter of Jan 31.

By the death of Mrs. Hon. Alexander W. Acheson, which occurred about 10 o'clock Sunday evening, Washington loses one of its best women.

Mrs. Jane Acheson was the daughter of the late Dr. John Wishart, and was born in this place in the year 1815, and was married to Hon. Alexander W. Acheson in 1836. She was the mother of eleven children, six of whom are deceased.

Five of her sons served as soldiers during the late war, one of them being killed at the head of his regiment at the battle of Gettysburg.

Of the children who survive her, Dr. Alexander Wilson and Dr. Henry Martyn Acheson are living in Texas, and Marcus Cunningham Acheson, Esq. Ernest Frances Acheson, of the Observer, and Miss Mattie (Martha) Acheson are well known residents of this place.

She was united with the Presbyterian church in 1832 and has ever been a constant member thereof.

She had been in poor health for sometime and her death was not unexpected by her friends.

Children--

Dr. John Wishart Acheson 1837-1872
David Acheson 1841-1863
Alexander Wilson Acheson 1841-1934
Mary Acheson 1842-1877
Marcus Cunningham Acheson 1844-1908
Joseph McKnight Acheson 1848-1886
Martha Wishart Acheson 1850-1908
Ernest Francis Acheson 1855-1917
Dr. Henry Martyn Acheson 1857-1909
---------------------------------------------

Mrs. Jane B. Acheson was a lineal descendant of Rev. George Wishart, a Scotch martyr, who was burned at the stake March 28, 1546, as a heretic.

Her father, Dr. John Wishart, came from Bedford to Washington in 1806, and for nearly sixty years was prominent as a practitioner of medicine.

Mrs. Acheson was born here June 8, 1815, was educated in the old Braddock's Field seminary, and in 1835 united with the Presbyterian church, of which she was a pious and devoted member until her lamented death, which occurred January 30, 1887.

Her death was not unexpected by the family and was peaceful and painless. Her body now lies at rest beside the remains of her husband and patriot-sons, awaiting the resurrection of the just. Her religion corresponded with her general character, which was direct, considerate and firm.

She was rather given to reticence in her emotion and to quiet methods in fulfilling her christian duties, but conscience ever held its supremacy, the mercy seat was her refuge in trouble, and she was ever quietly joyful in the house of prayer.
