Mrs. Nancy Sue (Cowley) Weise died peacefully at home on February 17th, 2016 in Springbrook, Wisconsin after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Nancy was 12 days shy of her 79th birthday.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Jim; daughters, Dianne (Tom) Koser of Rice Lake, WI, Dennise “Shelley” Skemp of St. Croix Falls, WI, Twyla Sockness of Sedalia, MO; six grandchildren, Stacy (Nate) Hollmann, Aaron (Kari) Skemp, JT and Taylor Koser, Sean and Gracie Sockness; Two great grandchildren, Adelaide and Dezi Hollmann; brother, Merton “Joe” C (Kathy) Cowley, and sister-in-law Rebecca “Becky” Ann (Kohler) Cowley, many nieces, nephews, and incredible friends. She is preceded in death by many, including her beloved grandmother Elna Agnes (Jennings) Cowley parents, Mert and Mildred Cowley, and her brother Michael “Mike” Brian (Becky) Cowley.

Nancy was born on March 1st, 1937 in Portland, Oregon to Merton “Mert” R and Mildred Iva Hansen Cowley. She graduated from Barron High School 1955, moving to Minneapolis, MN to work until returning to Barron, WI to marry Allen Carl Wintrone in 1957, having two daughters, Dianne and Shelley. Nancy divorced and later married her best friend James “Jim” Tony Weise on June 25th, 1977, becoming foster parents; they eventually permanently welcomed Twyla into their lives. An incredibly hard worker, Nancy always supported her family, working as a clerk at Super Value Foods, at the Barron Golf Course, selling advertising for the Barron News Shield, she also bartended at the VFW, and worked as Title 1 secretary for children with special needs before settling in an Administrative role at Jerome Foods. After retirement, Nancy and Jim moved to their cabin in Springbrook, WI, often traveling in their camper to Washburn, WI on Lake Superior where she loved to take her dog Pepi in the basket of her 4-wheeler with the breeze in their faces.

Wildly creative and kind, she has produced beautiful charcoal drawings, miles and miles of knitting and poetry, delightful handmade greeting cards and scrapbooks, gorgeous quilts and handmade clothing, bountiful gardens, a nourishing kitchen, and the start of an amazing novel. Her talent has ignited that creative passion in her daughters, grandchildren, and grandchildren. She had a gentle soul and was very generous, kind, and thoughtful. She loved mysteries and was savvy with technology, which she used to research, honor, and rekindle the memories of nearly 16,000 people before her death. She has selflessly given the gift we all wish to receive: to be remembered.

Nancy recently recalled the obituary of her great grandmother Henrietta “Myrtle” Cady Dorr, which contained a beautiful poem written by Myrtle called “The Bridge”. The following is an excerpt from one of Nancy’s poems called “The Visit”.

I was given a great secret
When I was very young,
Felt the warmth of tender love
Caught a peek of what’s to come.

Heard a promise of a peacefulness
No human is aware,
A day will come, a light will shine
Things EVERYONE can share.

Rethinking this as I grow older,
Removed the burdens from my shoulder
And brings a whisper in my ear
Reminding me there is no fear.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, February 22nd 2016 at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, with a celebration of life to immediately follow at the Springbrook-Trego-Earl VFW Post 10568.
